President-Elect Donald Trump

I’m shocked. Yesterday’s election results are simply stunning. Like many others, I never imagined that Donald Trump could win this election.

But he did. The American electorate has spoken and Donald Trump is the president-elect of the United States.

Wow. Just wow.

There is no doubt that this has been one of the most contentious elections in our nation’s history. I’ve never seen anything like it. The bitterness and divisiveness of the campaign was incredible, and unfortunately, sad. For me, the most tragic element of the last several months has been an election that seemed to be more about a cult of personalities rather than an argument over substantive policy disagreements. Nonetheless, the outcome is clear, and no matter how divided the electorate remains, we have elected a new president and his name is Donald Trump.

So regardless of whether you supported him or not, it is time to pray for the 45^th president of the United States. In just over 2 months, he will be our Commander in Chief and for all intents and purposes, the leader of the free world. Like those that preceded him, Trump is not perfect. His views are not shared by a lot of Americans. But soon he will be our president. He will be president of all Americans.

It’s going to be an interesting couple of months as the transition team goes to work. The first 100 days of his administration will likely be just as fascinating.

So get ready. Trump, Inc. is here. He has won. He is the president-elect of the United States.

That’s because you were listening to the fake, story-telling hacks in the media, instead of paying close attention. THAT is the real tragedy here.

And frankly, you prove that by saying what you said about about policy. Trump has had his policies laid out for months! Clinton’s plan, played out to the bitter. losing end, was to trash Trump.

Thank the Lord the Clintons are FINALLY gone!

  I’m convinced that the majority of polling is done with the intention of swaying the electorate, rather than objectively presenting factual data. Just like the majority or the “news” that we receive is geared more to telling us how we are supposed to think about the facts, rather than simply relaying the facts.
  
  The media in this country has become the tool of the two major parties. MSNBC is a tool for the mainstream Democratic Party. Fox is a tool for the mainstream Republican Party. The pollsters, I’m convinced, are just as politicized. They told us Trump didn’t stand a chance to convince us that he was too much of a “fringe” candidate to garner our support. Just like the media is telling us how he’s going to start a nuclear holocaust.

To me, the Trump campaign was without form in terms of “greatness” – it tugs emotional strings and plays to identity. Same for the racism, sexism, xenophobia prevalent in his support base. The press should be held to account for not pressing the issues. But how? Bring jobs back? Well, that’s not how free markets operate. Again, this has no form. Build a wall and make Mexico pay for it? Islamophobia? How is any of that substantial? Bring back coal, a fuel not fit for man nor beast in the mining or burning? I was put in mind of something Bonhoeffer wrote when I saw jingoism and sloganeering that he ran as a campaign in a most anti-intellectual fashion (how else can you craft in the minds of people that fiscal and monetary policy is like accounting and countries are like businesses? Kind of like thinking to use the profit motive, a device for building market share, to reduce medical costs as a share of GDP via insurance rather than universal coverage):

“Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than evil is. Against evil, one can protest; it can be exposed and, if necessary, stopped with force. Evil always carries the seed of its own self-destruction, because it at least leaves people with a feeling of uneasiness. But against stupidity, we are defenseless. Neither with protest nor with force can we do anything here; reasons have no effect. Facts that contradict one’s own prejudice need only to be disbelieved – in such cases stupid people even become critical, and when facts are unavoidable, they can simply be swept aside as meaningless isolated cases. Stupid people, in contrast to evil ones, are satisfied with themselves.”

Seriously, just the labeling of Hillary as being on the “left” when Sanders barely makes a dent as a social democrat on any global scale testifies to the problem – a desire to identify and feel but not to understand. At heart, I am what Europeans would term a Christian Democrat and have a soft spots for some forms of distributism (Chesterton rocks!) Here, they call that socialism and the sane people around the globe can only shake their heads.

I agree Graham: I was stunned when Wisconsin, Ohio, FL, PA, and WI all went to Trump. I didn’t see Michigan, but it seems likely that they leaned toward Donald also.
The power-brokers in both parties love globalization. The Clintons and Obama pushed these policies aggressively(why would the auto unions support them? They killed US manufacturing). Wall Street got rich, the Clintons were building a political gold mine with corporate and foreign money, and blue collar towns in middle America were gutted.
Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio did not forgive Nafta, nor did they forget it. They remembered exactly who shipped their jobs to other countries, and they reminded the world loudly and clearly by coming out in droves to elect Trump. McCain said those jobs aren’t coming back. Romney said Detroit should go bankrupt (his idea was actually rather clever, but the only thing the public heard was ‘bankrupt’). Trump told us he will bring those jobs back and blue collar USA put him in the White House. I don’t think he can actually bring the jobs back, but he plainly stated the problem and offered a solution that many thousands of workers were desperate to hear.
Biden said we need to figure out why these people are so angry. Biden’s ears are stuffed with corporate cash and he no longer listens to the people. Trump has known exactly why they are mad for several years, and he used that knowledge to become President.

This whole election has been a spectacle like no other. But the fact that Trump is the President elect. . .wow! I can’t believe that just happened.
