Conspiracy theories have been bombarding Americans like the drones inundating the Jersey shore. Just jump on X for a couple of moments, and you will be quickly drowned in narratives about aliens, depopulation agendas, the Pope making a deal with Hitler, and so on. Every news event quickly becomes fodder for a sinister plot taken right out of the X files. 

The inability of people to keep a secret, let alone be loyal to one another for more than a couple of years, convinces me that there will never be a grand long-term conspiracy that will be successful. It doesn’t mean there aren’t accidental conspiracies by accidental conspirators. Nor does it mean there might be parochial and short-term nefarious plots. But global? Humans aren’t that smart and far too self-centered and destructive. We can’t successfully organize with the lights on, so how would we do it in the dark?

However, I believe in one grand global, even universal, conspiracy! We celebrate it every Christmas. In the evening, while everyone was sleeping, God snuck onto our shores not to destroy us but to save us. Talk about a covert operation. However, our blindness, self-righteousness, and self-centeredness make surprising us a little easier. 

The alien took on our flesh. The creator became the creation, even a vulnerable, approachable, non-threatening little baby. His birth was announced to the unclean shepherds. His name was shared by the unseen and weak. God hid with the foolish, poor, and sinners in plain daylight. In front of everyone, He forgave those who thought they were unforgivable and raised the dead. He restored the outcast’s humanity. 

God’s conspiracy and plot culminated on one of many crosses outside of Jerusalem. And outside of Jerusalem, He rose again from the dead. Humanity’s sin paid for. Death cured. The conspiracy continues as Jesus sent beggars, fools, and sinners, like UFO abductees, out into the world to spread Joy instead of fear, hope instead of despair, and peace instead of war. All done under the nose of the self-important power-brokers and people breakers.

The reign of God is here and coming. You have been welcomed into it. One day, we will look up and see the risen Lord descending with angels. This is the end and the beginning, every knee bowing, loved ones coming out of their graves, a new world without secrets or evil but harmony and peace.
