A Jagged Contention: Revolution

Rev. Alexander Hewatt, the pastor of the Scotch Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC from 1763 to 1777, thought that the American Revolution was:

“the progress of that reformation which Luther attempted and introduced.”

Was Rev. Hewatt correct? Was Luther’s reformation in the 16th century merely a prelude to the revolution of the American states almost 250 years later? Did Luther’s break with Rome set the stage for the colonialists who would later break from the Church of England? Is the American cry for “freedom of conscience” inextricably linked to Luther?
