Your Name is on the List

Oh the outrage. Oh the shock. A rich powerful person had sex with underage girls and trafficked them to other rich powerful people. Oh my! Meanwhile, your teenage son is watching them have sex on his phone in the bathroom. But no, Epstein is the monster.

Are we that stupid or that self righteous to not see the pervert in our mirror?! We listen to music that glorifies rape and abuse. We cheered on rock stars who had hundreds of young women given to them in the 70s and 80s – absolutely in no way different than Epstein. Rich and powerful people acting out their fantasies really shocks your system and rocks the foundations of our society?! Or worse – is it some sort of conspiracy?! Have you read the accounts of David, Henry VIII, John F. Kennedy? What in the world is so monstrous about Epstein or his friends? Of course it’s wrong, but it isn’t unusual, or even irregular.

And you would do it too. If you had access to anything you wanted. If you thought you could get away with it. You know, just like when you look at your phone. Good morning, Mr. Epstein. How can I help you?

We have created a culture that now allows everyone to be an Epstein and which grooms victims ready to be abused. Sex without consequences frequently feels like the only issue during elections. No one ever tries to get a law passed to stop even the most heinous pornography. Oh sure if you film a 17-year old you are a sick monster, but if she’s 18, you’re a hero.

Repent, outraged reader. You are the villain in this saga. You’re name is on the list. You have willingly participated in a system that allows this to happen. You have turned a blind eye. You aren’t just a friend of the monster. You are the monster. Stop it. And stop being so shocked! It’s starting to look as ridiculous as Madonna’s recent performances.

Lord have mercy on us all. Thank God Christ died for sickos like us. Jesus who seems to be the only one who treated women as human beings, vulnerable people as kings and queens, sinners as saints.  Lord have mercy on us poor Pharisees. May we all find refuge in the forgiveness of Christ. May He move us from our obsession with sex to a love for our neighbor. May He come again quickly.

May we have hope that our name on that list of sinners is also on His list of grace.
