After God created everything, by His Word, in 6 days, He rested on the 7th. Not that He was tired, but creation was complete. It was finished! Later, in invited the Israelites into His rest, telling them that they didn’t need to do any work on the 7th day. They could relax in the realization that God’s got them. He provides for them. He feeds them. He delivers them from their enemies. They can rest in His hands.

So it shouldn’t surprise us that His Son, our savior, said, “it is finished,” at the last hour of the 6th day. Following the 3rd commandment, they took His body down before evening, the beginning of the 7th day for Israel. You shall do no work, God said. God’s got this!

It is finished. Salvation for sinners is complete. The restoration of creation, from the mess we made of it, is complete. Our debt is paid in full. Even your darkest secrets were nailed to the cross with Christ. It is finished. You are forgiven. You can rest from your guilt. You can rest from your fears. God provides it all!

But the Sabbath rest God invites you to is not just one day. Every day you can rest in Christ. Every day you can be confident that Jesus’ work is enough. His forgiveness is enough. His resurrection is enough. 

When you worry about your shame, it is finished. You are forgiven.

When you are frightened about your job, your health, your family. It is finished. God provides.

When you are looking at the grave. It is finished. Christ is risen. You will rise too.

“Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden,” Jesus says to you, “and I will give you rest!”
